It doesn’t seem like it was over 2 years ago, but YouTube confirms Hi Suhyun’s M/V for I’m Different featuring Bobby (IKON) was released way back on Nov 18, 2014.
Ok, 2014 wasn’t all that long ago, but time flies when you’re having fun.
The video for I’m Different was a sweet homage to first crushes everywhere. We see Hi Suhyun on their way to school when they notice the cute new kid, Bobby. The girls proceed to fall head over heels for him in adorable dorky fashion. Alas, Bobby’s status as once a crush will forever remain for both girls in the end because Bobby has a girlfriend.
I remember when this song was released because I fell in love with it instantly. That old school soul, pre-funk brass was trending big during that time and is still more or less on point these days too.
But there was more to this song than just being on trend. For one thing, Lee Hi and Suhyun (AKMU) make a great duo.
Their vocals are like lemonade on a warm sunny day. They are refreshing and bright with a hint of something a little more biting in their notes.
Then there’s (My Ugly Friend) Bobby’s rap feature leading to the plot of the track.
Bobby has been called out (during Show Me The Money S3) for his rap style, masking his softer voice in a huskier baritone costume.
But especially upon Bobby’s feature in I’m Different, I can forgive him for what comes across as playing voice dress-up because I believe he possesses his own style of rapping that complements both Lee Hi and Suhyun’s delightful delivery.
I’m Different peaked at No. 1 on the Gaon Digital Chart and No. 19 on its Mobile Chart.
While everyone from this project have moved onto different projects, I would be really pleased with a Hi Suhyun comeback in the future. But knowing YG, Hi Suhyun will forever remain a crush-worthy, one-hit collaboration project we’ll always remember.
